Central Library on Quay Square will open on Sundays from this weekend. From Sunday 11 October 2026, the library will be open every Sunday from 11:00 to 16:00, giving you an extra day to borrow books, use the computers, study or simply find a warm, quiet place to spend a few hours.
Sunday opening was the most requested change in our libraries survey earlier this year, chosen by 61% of the 3,900 people who took part. We’re paying for it within the existing libraries budget by changing staff rotas, so opening hours on other days aren’t affected.
Central Library opening hours
| Day | Opening hours |
|---|---|
| Monday to Friday | 08:30–20:00 |
| Saturday | 09:00–17:00 |
| Sunday | 11:00–16:00 (from 11 October 2026) |
What you can do on a Sunday
- borrow and return books, audiobooks and DVDs
- use the public computers, printers and free wifi
- work in the silent study room on the second floor
- join family story time at 11:30, for children aged up to 5 and their grown-ups
- collect books and other items you’ve reserved
Libraries are one of the few places left where anyone can walk in, stay as long as they like and not spend a penny. Opening Central Library on Sundays means students, families and people who work during the week can make the most of it too.

Branch libraries
Opening hours at our branch libraries in Northbank, Saltmarsh, Wren Valley, Eastcliff and Fennick are not changing. You’ll find their hours and addresses on our libraries page.
Night of the Libraries
Central Library and all five branch libraries will stay open late on Saturday 31 October, from 18:00 to 23:00, for the Night of the Libraries: an evening of stories, music, games and Halloween surprises. See what’s on.
