New public toilets opened today in the pavilion on Quay Square. They’re free to use and open every day from 07:00 to 22:00, serving visitors to City Hall, Central Library and events in the square.
What’s inside
- six cubicles with floor-to-ceiling doors, each with its own washbasin
- two accessible toilets, both with baby changing
- a fully accessible changing room with a ceiling hoist, an adult-sized changing bench and space for two carers
- a free drinking water refill point outside
The toilets cost £640,000 and are part of a wider programme of improvements to Quay Square. They’re cleaned and checked every two hours while they’re open.
Good public toilets make a city centre work for everyone. For many disabled people, a changing room with a hoist is the difference between a day out and staying at home, so this is a really welcome addition.

Deputy Mayor Kwame Asante said: “When we asked people what would improve Quay Square, better public toilets came top of the list. They’re clean, safe and open late, and they make the square a better place to spend time, whether you’re visiting the library, coming to an event or meeting friends.”
