Discounts and support

You could pay less council tax if you live alone or have a low income, or if someone in your home is a student, a carer or disabled.

Single person discount

If you are the only adult (aged 18 or over) living in your home, you get 25% off your council tax bill.

For example, a Band D bill of £2,118.44 goes down by £529.61, to £1,588.83 a year.

To apply, email counciltax@larkhaven.example or call 01632 960 000. Tell us the date you started living alone.

You must tell us within 21 days if another adult moves in.

Council Tax Support

Council Tax Support reduces your bill if you are on a low income or get benefits. You can get it whether you own your home, rent it or live there rent-free.

How much you get depends on your income, your savings and who lives with you. If you have reached State Pension age, you can get up to 100% off your bill. If you are of working age, you can get up to 80% off.

You cannot usually get Council Tax Support if you have savings of more than £16,000.

To apply, you will need:

  • proof of your income, such as payslips or a benefit award letter
  • bank statements for the last 2 months
  • proof of any savings

Call 01632 960 000 or visit the customer service desk at City Hall to apply. We will help you fill in the form.

Common questions

Can a discount be backdated?

Yes. We can backdate a discount to the date your circumstances changed, as long as you qualified for it then. Send us proof of the date.

Do I need to apply again every year?

No. Your discount continues until your circumstances change. We may write to you to check that you still qualify.
