Harbour Street cycle lane: the first three months in numbers

In its first three months, the Harbour Street protected cycle lane carried more than 215,000 cycle trips, more than double the cycling on the street before it opened.

The protected cycle lane on Harbour Street opened on 15 June 2026. In its first 13 weeks, automatic counters recorded more than 215,000 cycle trips along the street: an average of 2,370 a day, more than double the number before the lane opened.

The 1.4 km lane is separated from traffic by a kerb and is now part of Larkhaven’s 212 km of cycle paths.

What you told us

We asked people who use Harbour Street what they thought, and 1,250 people replied. 81% of people who cycle said they feel safer, and 64% of people who walk along the street said it’s more pleasant than before.

You also told us what isn’t working so well, and we’re acting on it:

  • Some blind and partially sighted people find it hard to cross the cycle lane to reach bus stops. By the end of November, we’ll add zebra crossings and tactile paving at all four bus stop bypasses.
  • Some shops find deliveries difficult in the mornings. We’re adding two more loading bays near Quay Square.
  • People asked for more cycle parking, so we’ve installed 40 more spaces along the street.

The numbers show what happens when people feel safe on a bike: they use it. Just as important, bus journeys haven’t got any slower. Thank you for your feedback. We’re fixing the things that need fixing.
