Weekly food waste collections start in January

Every household in Larkhaven will get a free weekly food waste collection from Monday 4 January 2027, with free caddies delivered in December.

From Monday 4 January 2027, every household in Larkhaven will have its food waste collected every week. We’ll deliver free caddies to every home in December, so you’ll have everything you need to start in the new year.

Around a third of what goes into a typical black bin in Larkhaven is food. Collected separately, it can be turned into renewable energy and fertiliser for farmland. Full Council agreed the funding for the new service at its meeting on 24 September.

What you’ll get

  • a small kitchen caddy to keep on the worktop or under the sink
  • a larger outdoor caddy with a lockable lid, which our crews will empty every week
  • a roll of compostable liners and a leaflet about the service

If you live in a flat with shared bins, we’ll provide communal food waste bins instead and write to you before the service starts.

How it works

Food waste will be collected every week on your usual collection day, starting in the week of Monday 4 January 2027. Put your outdoor caddy out by 07:00 and bring it back in by 20:00, just like your other bins. Your black and blue bins will still be collected on alternate weeks, as now.

What can go in your caddy

Yes, please

  • cooked and uncooked food
  • plate scrapings and leftovers
  • meat and fish, including bones
  • fruit and vegetable peelings
  • tea bags and coffee grounds
  • bread, rice, pasta and eggshells

No, thanks

  • packaging of any kind
  • liquids such as milk or cooking oil
  • plastic bags
  • garden waste
  • pet waste

Food waste collections are one of the biggest things we can do to cut the rubbish we send for disposal. It takes a few seconds to scrape a plate into a caddy, and if everyone joins in we expect to collect around 8,000 tonnes of food waste a year.

What you need to do

  • Nothing yet: your caddies will arrive during December.
  • If they haven’t arrived by Friday 18 December, let us know.
  • Line your caddy with compostable liners or newspaper, never plastic bags.
  • When you need more liners, tie one to the handle of your outdoor caddy on collection day and the crew will leave a new roll.
